Utrecht is small enough to walk around and big enough to surprise you. Students, travelers, and residents keep the city center lively, with the Dom Tower as a constant landmark. The wharves along the Oudegracht are unlike any others in the world.

Best time: In the morning, with light from the side.

The square between the Dom Tower and the church, with tourists, guides, and students. Look for the lines in the paving that mark where the church once stood.

Best time: In the evening, for the evening light.

Neude

A square with outdoor seating and the old post office, now a library. The light inside the main hall is fantastic.

Must-see spots for street photographers

Utrecht Central Station and Stationsplein

The busiest train station in the Netherlands, with endless streams of travelers. Long lines, glass, and backlighting make it a place for layered photos.

Best time: Year-round, even in bad weather.

Oudegracht and the wharves

Two levels: the street above and the wharves along the water. Shoot from above to capture outdoor seating, cyclists, and reflections.

Best time: In the morning, when the light falls on the wharves.

Pandhof van de Dom

The cloister garden next to the Dom Church, quiet and understated. Arches, shadows, and the occasional visitor make for quiet, atmospheric photos.

Best light and times to visit

Morning light on the wharves, side lighting on Twijnstraat, and evening light on Domplein. The area around the station works year-round, even in bad weather.
