Street photography in Rotterdam

Updated on October 17, 2026 · 5 photographers contributed photos

At a glance

Rotterdam is gritty, modern, and built on a grand scale. Tall buildings, broad squares, and hard shadows make it a city for street photography with strong graphic elements. Rotterdam locals are direct, and that comes through on the streets.

Everyday city life

Afrikaandermarkt

Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Rotterdam Zuid. A mix of cultures, voices, and colors, far from the tourists.

Witte de Withstraat

Art, cafes, and a colorful mix of people. Quiet and relaxed during the day, busy and full of light at night.

Best time: Quiet during the day, busy and full of light at night.

Katendrecht and Deliplein

Once a rough dockside neighborhood, now a lively square with outdoor seating. Residents and visitors mingle easily here.

Tourist hotspots

Erasmus Bridge

The city's landmark, with white lines, cables, and a stream of cyclists and pedestrians. Works well for silhouettes and minimalist compositions.

Best time: In the evening.

Lijnbaan

The first pedestrian shopping street in the Netherlands. Plenty of people, clean lines in the postwar architecture, and awnings that cast interesting shadows.

Must-see spots for street photographers

Blaak, Markthal and Cube Houses

Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays beneath the enormous arch of the Markthal, with the yellow Cube Houses next door. Color, geometry, and crowds in one place.

Best time: In strong sunlight with long shadows, or in low light for reflections in the glass facades.

Rotterdam Central Station

A large hall with a pointed roof and sharply defined light. Travelers in a hurry form silhouettes against the glass.

Schouwburgplein

An open square with large red lighting towers. Open space, hard shadows, and people dwarfed by their surroundings.

Best time: In strong sunlight with long shadows.

Beurstraverse

The Koopgoot, a sunken shopping passage with curves and stairs. Pleasing lines and views of people from above.

Best light and times to visit

Harsh sunlight and long shadows in squares like Schouwburgplein and Blaak. Glass facades catch reflections in low light. Evening around the Erasmus Bridge.

Practical tips and respect

The metro and trams take you everywhere. Beurstraverse and Markthal are partly private property, and security staff may approach you if you use a tripod.

Walking route

Rotterdam Central Station, Lijnbaan, Beurstraverse, Blaak and Markthal, Witte de Withstraat, Erasmus Bridge, Katendrecht, Afrikaandermarkt. About 8 km.
