Updated on October 17, 2026

At a glance

Amsterdam is compact, busy, and always moving. Cyclists, tourists, and locals cross paths here, and that collision of worlds makes for photos. The light over the canals and the IJ is soft and changes quickly.

Best time: Early morning at the market, every day except Sunday.

Albert Cuypmarkt

The city's longest market, in De Pijp. Vendors calling out, neighbors shopping for groceries, and an endless stream of faces on a narrow street.

Best time: Early morning.

Dappermarkt

A market in Oost where people from all over the world shop. Fewer tourists, more everyday life, and colorful encounters.

Best time: Early morning.

Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk

A long shopping street with local businesses, cyclists, and outdoor cafe seating. This is where Amsterdam's locals walk, and the morning light from the side is beautiful.

Best time: In the morning, when the light comes from the side.

The busy heart of the city, with a palace, pigeons, street performers, and groups of tourists. Ideal for layered photos and unexpected moments in the crowd.
