Ed van der Elsken: Photographer Films Amsterdam 1982

Ed van der Elsken films the center of Amsterdam with a camera mounted on the roll bar of his Mini Moke buggy. He shoots in slow motion, then speeds up the footage when editing it into the film.

Amsterdammers pass in front of his camera: punks, older people, street musicians, Hell’s Angels, and homeless people. Van der Elsken playfully challenges them, getting a reaction. He adds his own wry commentary to the footage.

The video is on the Televisie Rewind channel and runs about 10 minutes. The film was shot in the summer of 1982 and shows the center of Amsterdam in the early 1980s. The footage was broadcast by VPRO.
