Audrey Sands on Lisette Model
Historian and curator Audrey Sands talks about Lisette Model, photography history, and the archive.
Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington all stood in front of Lisette Model's camera. Her jazz photographs are the starting point for this conversation between Sasha Wolf and photography historian and curator Audrey Sands. Sands discusses her book Lisette Model: The Jazz Pictures, for which she spent years researching Model's rarely shown photo archive.
The original title of the PhotoWork Foundation video is Historian and Curator Audrey Sands on Lisette Model, Photo History, and the Archive. Over about 56 minutes, Sands and Wolf also discuss how photographs became collectors' items in the second half of the twentieth century and how museums and other institutions help shape the history of photography.
You get a look at the work behind a photo book or exhibition. What choices does a historian make when selecting and interpreting photographs after the photographer has died? The conversation shows how those choices determine which parts of a photographer's work we see and how we understand them.
